Blowers done

Amidst the terrible Christmas that we are having at home, I have managed to maintain some sketchy momentum on The Hobbyist project. Today I managed to finish the ‘blowers’. Essentially each song has got some kind of woodwind instrument accompanying it in some form. I cannot predict what percentage will survive the mix. The intention was to simply add layers and dimensions to the tracks so that it has some sonic interest going on. I think some of these additional elements will end up adding character to some of the songs, if not being the most characterful element itself.

The bass harmonica and the melodica were my favourites to play around with, although I think the Kerry whistle also got some great sounds out of it. The disappointment was the ocarina, which I had hoped to use quite a bit, but it never really jammed well in the songs where it could, and was out of key for others. Ho hum.

Next is the ‘plinky plinks’ like the thumb piano, glockenspiel, hand drum and (not plinky) Stylophone. Like the ‘strings’ and ‘blowers’, I’ll add elements from one of the above and spread them out evenly between the tracks. My aim is to have this done by the end of next week.
