It’s difficult to know when to draw a line and stop fiddling with vocals. I had my lyrics prepared this time and have recorded all the parts that I think I need. I know that there are some that I will be unhappy with later, or others that may need adding, but I am keen to keep momentum going so don’t want to keep fiddling and get no further.
It’s already apparent that some songs are weaker than others and the final playlist will inevitably be shorter. I’m particularly disappointed with two tracks that we primarily led by the banjo. My fingerpicking, when combined with the miking, has made it a little muddy and resonant in a plummy tone, rather than a crisp and succinct one. When I added vocals the songs created fatigue on the ears. Other tracks have different issues, but I’m trying to reserve judgement until the plinky-plinks and blowers are in, because sometimes that will change the character of the songs.
One track (titled Painter) didn’t have lyrics written beforehand. It’s interesting how I have struggled to write lyrics for it despite having a strong melody for it. This has been similar to the block on Qualia and An Unreachable Peak, which I overcame with perseverance but out of kilter with the rest of this project. I’m inclined to leave it instrumental and see whether it makes the cut.
I think I’m a bit behind schedule but I hope to get the blowers recorded next and see where that takes the project.
