STORY:
Crushing Snails is a film with two parts. Part One: On Revenge follows Rosie, a cleaner whose past is not all that it seems. While working the night shift, she is haunted by memories that threaten her ability to live comfortably with herself.
Part Two: On Forgiveness revolves around Sarah, a young woman who must clear her brother’s home after his unfortunate death. Struggling to keep positive, Sarah searches for ways to come to terms with her loss. It is only when she rediscovers her creativity, suppressed since she was a child, that Sarah finds the confidence to connect with the outside world again. After discovering old love letters that reveal more about her brother than she previously realised, Sarah decides to pulp the love letters into papier-mâché snails that she leaves for strangers to discover. These are left with the following message:
I LIKE TO TRAVEL. TAKE A PICTURE OF ME AND THEN PASS ME TO A FRIEND.
HISTORY:
Crushing Snails was an experimental project. I wanted to play around with various different aspects of filmmaking; working with non-actors, working without dialogue (see Part One: On Revenge) and trying to musically score a production (see Part Two: On Forgiveness). I wanted to mix media, by sending the papier-mâché snails into the wider world and then writing a book and a score to accompany the project. On the whole it was a hugely informative and educational experience for me, but perhaps slightly too experimental to gain appreciation with wider audiences!
