Abyss (1999)

I have been really reluctant to add this video for a variety of reasons. I have actually cut around 20 minutes out of this upload, simply because of permissions. There are some elements of this that I am still not sure of, but I figure that the context of how and when this video was made make it understandable. Simply put, this video was an extra-curricular adventure (filmmaking) that follows another extra-curricular adventure (being in a band) at a time when I should have been concentrating on college work. The media studies department had an SVHS camera and SVHS linear edit suite. Pretty crude equipment even at the time, but this was lo-fi and I loved it. I recently digitised it for fear that the copy would be lost forever, and while I’m embarrassed of it now, I may find it cute if I make it to my seventies.

To be honest, I’m only including this here for the sake of completeness. Like some other videos on this site, it is of personal interest and probably no interest to a wider audience. Why post it here? Like most collaborative things, it belongs to the people in it and who made it. The video is awful, the music is pretentious, and I am so insufferably up my own arse that I cringe at the whole thing. Nevertheless, it exists. Why should it sit on a tape in my house where no-one can see it? More importantly, its value became apparent in the years subsequent to the band when not all of us had our health, and it served as a reminder of better times. I also include it here to provide some context of the music that we were working on as a band, which was never preserved in any album releases. Larry, Paddy and Greg were all much more talented than me, which is evident from the video, but we had great times jamming together.

The bulk of this video was actually filmed at the West One Four Club by a multi-camera operator called Alan Goff, who ran a side business of supplying bands with VHS copies of their gigs.
