Update on new music project

70 projects

I blogged in the summer about a new music project that I have been working on. I won’t repeat it all here but the crux was that I have tried using iPhone apps to generate ideas for a new album, and wanted to build 70 project ideas through improvisation rather than design. I have now completed those 70 projects.

Each is approximately 3 minutes long and usually compromise of 3 or more audio tracks. Their BPMs differ, and so do their keys/structure. I will now attempt to shape and sculpt them into something coherent.

This is a very different approach and workflow for me so I’m a little unsure of how best to approach it, but I think my first step will be to critically listen to each of these and create some kind of scoring metric to evaluate each one. I know I prefer some over others. There is a lot of shit here, but even within that, some small sound or sequence may have merit. While I score I think I will make a note of the project metrics like BPM and key if I know it. That will help me fuse things together later if I want/need to.

Once I have that base of tracks that I think sound best, I will begin to look for ways to edit and improve them. I’m not sure of where lyrics will come in this project, that will probably all come much later. For now, I am happy with the next few steps without worrying about the further ones.
