I interviewed myself for an imaginary podcast while walking the dog this afternoon.
“Tell us more about your creative process James.” I demanded of myself.
“Well, James, I don’t really consider there to be one single process. I could say that I am on some kind of journey, but that would be a hack response, the cliché answer. It would suggest there was some kind of destination. Some kind of starting point in the past and finishing line in the future. No, that is not true for me. I would describe my creative process to be more like a shopping trolley with a broken wheel. I have a purpose in mind but I am constantly having to fight the trolley. Wrestle against some other fate or will. Occasionally, by serendipity, the trolley and I go in a similar direction and things just work. Other times, it refuses to go where I think it should go, and we end up somewhere else. Sometimes we complete the shop, after much stress and tension. Other times I abandon the trolley and sulk. I believe this is a suitable metaphor for my creative process.”
Before I could thank myself for such a profound and spiritual response, my attention was drawn to a bag of dog pooh hanging halfway up a tree. I stood and looked at it for a couple of minutes, wondering how it had got there and what it all meant.
