I’m quite intrigued

‘I’m quite intrigued’ was the subject line of this email from one of my students (I’ve removed his name just to be kind):

James!

A. here if you hadn’t gathered already, from University? Now approaching my third year?

Just wanted to drop an email, because, well, basically I’m quite intrigued about the Crushing Snails project, but can’t quite fathom it out at the minute. It’s a film.. but its an experiment, but its an art project… with animation?!

Here was my response:

Hi!

Yes yes yes. I think I have gone quite mad. In all seriousness, it is this project that I’ve wanted to do for ages but other films got in the way.

It’s not strictly transmedia, as I haven’t created a story world or anything like that. It’s a project that centres around the idea that we can be creative for creative’s sake, and find fun in being involved, as opposed to making art exclusive. I’ve made an army of paper mache snails. They are central to a film that I’ve made that has been a film experiment for myself. The snails are being sent around the world and being photographed by volunteers who the pass them on to a friend and eventually they travel far and wide. It is early days but they are getting there!

Next up will be music, where I’ll need a hand scoring stuff. And then there is animation, which will be lots of 2D drawings by myself but interspersed with other peoples drawings too hopefully. Once the whole thing is done, I should have a whole load of media and narrative that I will be able to play around with and do interactive screenings whereby I can give presentations/oral storytelling/ film clips and live music to tell the story. It should be quite fun… a bit of a mind bender really, but that’s why we are here right?! 🙂

I hope your summer is awesome and you’re looking forward to your final year!

James

The good students always ask questions when they aren’t sure!
