Ljubljana

Last night the food was basic but tasty. I got back into my tent on top of the hostel and it was still too warm. I had a good shower and used my small fan to chill the tent. It worked and I had one of the best night’s sleep since the trip began.

This morning I went for breakfast while taking advantage of the late check out. My Eggs Royale was in an Instagram heaven called Wonderland. This new form of tourism has completely passed me by as I am not on Instagram. Food was average.

Later, I managed to leave my luggage in the hostel while walking around the town. Ljubljana is thankfully small and beautiful. It is easy to walk around the centre and see most of the sights in a few hours. This is great as it is so hot!

I see the Old Town, the castle, the Tivoli Park and a dingy bit of town that looks like it would be a great night life spot, but is pretty squalid in the day. I did think about wandering around last night to get a bit of night life but I am fearful of being tired and hot the next day, and have no regrets at getting my sleep!

Similarly, I am now sat back in the hostel for a while to avoid the heat and relax before the train. I could have gone to Zagreb earlier than I intended but I didn’t think of it until the opportunity had passed. I’m not sure an earlier train solves the heat issue.

It is pleasant writing this and resting. I managed to read Moby Dick earlier and get further through it. It is still a holiday and not some punishing experience. My Fitbit shows that I have been physically pushed the last week, with lots of exercise and crap sleep. It is not sustainable like it was when I was younger!

Later – 8.03pm

The train journey from Ljubljana was beautiful. That stretch from Salzburg to Zagreb is wonderful. There was a storm brewing (literally, not metaphorically) when I left Ljubljana. The heat was creating oppressive pressure and thunderstorms were approaching. the journey had little rain, but some thunder and lightning.

Dinner time in Zagreb. All checked in at the hostel, so time to have some food. First meal since my Instagram Eggs Royale so I am hungry. I came to a restaurant for beef schnitzel, rice and peas. Not cheap, but I missed a meal so worth it. May try to see France versus Spain later.

First impressions of Zagreb:

– Fewer tourists. Much less than Munich and Ljubljana.

– Lots of construction work going on. I can already see some of the landmarks are covered in scaffolding.

It is a little unfair to repair all landmarks at the same time as poor tourists don’t get to see any of it! My hostel is unusual. Tucked away in a derelict car park. It may be that I have a six bed dorm to myself.
